Why process automation?

In addition to decreasing production costs and increasing quantities, robot-based machining solutions reduce the burden on those employees who previously had to perform these tasks manually.


Flying chips and the use of heavy tools, such as cutting and grinding wheels, pose an acute risk of injury to their employees. It is not for nothing that trade associations demand the use of automation technologies to provide employees with an ergonomic working environment and thereby protect them from monotonous and physically demanding activities.

Example laser weld seam inspection

Robiscan is a high-end inspection system for tactile laser welding and soldering seams. It reliably detects even the smallest defects such as pores or splatters (to 50µm) while at the same time keeping the pseudo defect rate to a minimum (to 0.004%). Numerous large premium OEMs use Robiscan as standard in their production.

This high level of reliability is achieved through numerous in-house developments, such as the hardware-independent vibration compensation or the powerful evaluation procedures. Robiscan determines up to 40 geometric characteristics (e.g. depth, width, diameter, etc.) for each defect. As user, you can define the inspection rules, where required.

Teaching By Demonstration

Programming robots requires a lot of time, money and know-how? With the Teaching By Demonstration principle and our integrated path planning functions, we disprove this prejudice. Your polishing robot is already functional in two simple steps.

Step 1: Move the processing tool to the edge points of the surface to be processed as well as areas with orientation changes of the surface.

Step 2: Use our intuitive user interface to parameterize the robot path. Here, for example, a machining pattern, the contact force and the machining speed are specified.

New tasks can thus be adapted by the user within a very short time without having to spend money on external programmers.

Example surface inspection

Automation W+R has been focusing on surface inspection for over 40 years. We develop our own special detection processes. With these, we push the limits of what is technically reachable and can detect even the smallest defects such as dents/dells, scratches, notches, … even more reliably.

A specialty is the inspection of unpainted surfaces, for example sheet metal. These are usually more difficult to inspect than painted surfaces. But early inspection can save you even more costs. Our solutions range from the complete inspection of the entire car bodies with several robots, up to steel lamellas at a speed of 20 parts per second.

Why streamline quality control?

This is how we recognize every mistake

For more than 40 years we have been developing our own detection methods, with which we push the limits of what is technically feasible.

When testing the material, the probe is guided along the seam after the welding process. At the same time, images are created and evaluated in real time. In this way, even the smallest dents, scratches and notches are found. Minimal flaws such as pores or spatter (up to 50 µm) are reliably detected – with a minimal pseudo error rate (up to 0.004%).

How does the BinSpect work?

At the heart of our BinSpect solution is a 3D camera system that captures the product carrier together with the bulk material. The data is compared with CAD files of the components to be gripped by means of image processing and other algorithms.

The goal is the precise localization of parts that can be gripped. As soon as removable parts have been identified, the optimum robot path is automatically calculated, taking interference contours into account, and transmitted to the robot. The robot then moves to the identified part and grips it reliably.

Version 1: Measurement in 2D

In 2D measurement, the palletized material is detected by an image processing system and the position of the coordinates is transmitted to the robot controller.

Depending on the application, this can be sensor-guided (system integrated on the robot gripper) or static (sensor above the depalletizing area). Both variants ensure absolute safety when handling the workpieces.

Version 2: Measurement in 3D
